Action Steps to Mastering Label Reading
- Know Why We Avoid Food Additives
- On a Protective Diet we eat for optimal health, eliminating everything that causes physical food addiction and chronic cravings, including food additives and chemical flavor enhancers.
- Food additives are more addicting than caffeine.
- Food manufacturers pay chemists to chemically enhance foods with exciting concentrated flavors that affect taste bud reception and elicit an unnatural dopamine response. Their profit-driven goal is to create chemical dependency causing you to overconsume their product and secure your loyalty to their brand for life.
- In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) allows additives to have names that sound healthy.
- The FDA does not require food additives to be listed individually when they are chemically coupled with natural ingredients.
- Become an Expert
- Familiarize yourself with common food additives.
- If you can’t pronounce it, you shouldn’t be eating it.
- Canned goods should only contain the food, water and salt.
- Beware of foods marketed as “Salt Free”, “Fat Free”, and “Sugar Free”; often even more chemically enhanced.
- Chewing Gum also has additives.
- This class includes a “picture walk” through several actual food labels and what to look for.
- Source Additive-Free Ingredients
- There is no list of PD approved food brands because companies change the composition of their products.
- The Basic Question: “Can I find (insert label word here) as a separately sold item on the grocery store shelf?”
- Read the label! Find alternatives. Store brand products are often the cleanest (especially mustard).
- Be willing to go to multiple stores or order online if necessary.
