Hoppin’ John Premium PD Recipe


This classic dish from the Carolinas is enjoyed year-round, but traditionally served and celebrated throughout the South on New Year’s Day as part of a feast to grant everyone a prosperous New Year. Prosperity is symbolized across this classic Southern plate with black-eyed peas to represent coins, collard greens to symbolize American currency, and cornbread is golden like bars of gold. This year I am introducing health to this classic plate of American history. I have eliminated all the fat and highlighted the delicious rich flavors of the South with this quick-prep pressure cooking or stovetop recipe.     Never had this before so decided to try it. Liked it very much. Comes together quickly except I needed to first pressure cook dried black eyed peas since I couldn’t find frozen. But still easy and satisfying dish. Might add a touch more cayenne next time.Thank you!

    I loved this recipe so much. Frooze up small serving size containers and when too busy to cook pulled out of freezer and added some greens to it and had a great meal. Thanks for such a delicious recipe Julie!

    All you need is a pressure cooker to make this happen! These are my favorite kinds of recipes. It’s all done in the PC and then like magic – it’s done. It makes lots of servings and is very, very good. It has lots of flavor.

    Well this recipe was one of our favorites. So easy and delicious. The mixture of spices and the smoky flavor from the liquid smoke really combined into our favorite rice dish (besides plain brown rice). (I used half the liquid smoke). Only question I would have is what to do if doubling in the instant pot since liquid does not double for rice recipes in a pressure cooker. I doubled it and used 4 1/2 cups of broth and it turned out fine – perhaps a little moist with all the veggies in there. Next time I double it I think I will use a little less than 4 1/2 cups broth.

    This was pretty tasty, the hubs loved it. I messed up by putting a whole teaspoon of ground chipotle pepper instead of 1/4 tsp of cayenne. Was using chipotle since I didn’t have cayenne. Didn’t triple check recipe before I added it. It was too spicy for me, but totally my fault. Love the one pot meal, with a little less spice and it would be perfect. Will be trying this again.

      oh, and I left out the bell pepper, as it does not sit well with my digestive system.

    It seems I start all my reviews of Julie’s recipes the same way; “WOW!” “AMAZING!” “OUTSTANDING!” This time she has truly outdone herself with the Hoppin’ John. Why I had cans of black eyed peas in my pantry is beyond me, they must have been for a recipe in the past, but I can’t recall why. I am glad I did, made this dish quick and simple to put together without having to visit the local market. The only ingredient I didn’t have was collard greens, but greens are greens and decided to use spinach as a substitute.

    I did used a frozen mixed bag of peppers and onion, along with frozen spinach in my dish. Did it take away from the recipe? Not that I could tell. Honestly, I have never had collard greens, so I don’t know how different the flavor of the dish would have been. I do know that the final product was one of the best dishes I have tasted in awhile. I kept digging through the rice, looking for the meat, that wasn’t there. Thanks in part to the smoked flavor, the texture of the spinach and the black eyed peas. It all came together nicely.

    This is delicious! Love the flavor and that it was a one pot meal. Next time I will use a red pepper instead of a green pepper just so I can enjoy the color.

    I really enjoyed this recipe for a few reasons; I had all the ingredients on hand, it was easy, we could just throw it into the I-pot and return a little while later, and most of the family liked it. (one kid wouldn’t try it because it was green). To answer the above question on cooking the rice, I didn’t cook it ahead and it turned out perfectly. A great weekday dish for a busy family. Just throw it in when you get home, do a few chores and then sit down to a savory comfort food.

    You read my mind Julie Marie! I was looking for a recipe for Hoppin John on PD! I have dry black eyed peas soaking (before I saw this recipe). I’ll be making this in my IP and good to know that PD recipes are for low pressure.

      You may need to pre-cook the dried black-eyed peas. This recipe uses frozen and they are fresh not dried.

    I’m guessing the 2 cup brown rice are cooked?

      The rice is NOT cooked. I would never leave you guessing what to do in a recipe. If the rice was cooked it would state how to cook it or to use precooked cook rice.
