One of my favorite recipes so far–good comfort food!
I’ve shared this dish with a few different (picky) family members and friends. Everyone loved the tamale pie and went back for seconds! This is ab easy dish to mane lmake for any occasion!

Might it work to use mashed potatoes on top?
Yes, you could sub mashed potatoes. I wouldn’t call it Tamale Pie. It would be a South Western Shepard’s Pie.
No, it didn’t sit long. I just think it was too much so got thick on top. I’ll put a little less on next time. It was really good other than a little dryness.

I enjoyed the flavors in the filling but the Masa topping seemed a bit too dry. Next time I might cut back on the corn flour a bit or increase the water to make it less dense. Did you have the same issues while you were testing the recipe?
No it should turn out with a crispy top and moist in the middle. One ideas to help trouble shoot: Did you let the batter sit for a while before spreading it on? This dough will dry out fast.
