  1. This was the second time I had attempted the bread sticks, the first being last week and I was disappointed in how they turned out. No fault of Julie’s or the recipe but I have not had good luck baking any form of bread. I know temperatures and yeast can be temperamental. This time around I seemed to have struck gold with the bread sticks and was amazed at how they come out.

Following the directions I added the water, apple sauce and yeast together. I was a bit disappointed to not see any bubbles. but the consistency of the wet ingredients changed, which told me something was occurring. I mixed the flour with the salt and then added the wet together and mixed.

I understand dough needs time to rise and I probably don’t let mine rise long enough, but this time around I had 60 minutes and the dough did just that. At that point I knew the sticks were going to come out very good.

I quickly mixed up the garlic topping, which I actually needed more of as I ran out before cover all 10 bread sticks. I might make a bit more next time I use this recipe, as some of the sticks were a bit light on garlic topping.

These sticks went in the oven to bake, as I just let my Cream of Celery soup simmer on low. Once the timer went off I was amazed to see my bread stick had risen! I was so happy and let them cool down just a bit before sharing them with my son and wife, both who loved them.

This is another recipe that will quickly become a dinner favorite, especially with soups. Thanks for the effort Julie!

  2. I have always loved to cook, but before PD I was very intimidated by bread and dough recipes. Thank you so much for making it so simple! I love love love these bread sticks, and my 7 year old daughter does too. If I hadn’t made them myself, I would have sworn they were baked with garlic butter!
